New York unveils ambitious wind strategy

New York State governor Andrew Cuomo has revealed plans to build up to 2.4 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 to power 1.25 million homes.

Cuomo called on the Long Island Power Authority to approve a 90 MW project 30 miles (48 km) off Montauk on Long Island’s South Fork.

Deepwater Wind proposed to develop the Montauk wind farm in March 2014. Deepawater is the company responsible for commissioning the USA’s first offshore wind power project – the 30 MW Block Island Wind Farm located off the Rhode Island coast – which came online in December 2016.

A second project will provide approximately 800 MW of offshore wind power in an area 17 miles (27.3 km) south of the Rockaway Peninsula. In December 2016, Statoil Wind US won an auction from the federal government to lease the area for wind energy development.
